I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

    MLA: Could you lead it?

It became apparent about a month ago that the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council was going to need a new Chief Executive. Now the advert has gone live, and applications are invited from the great and the good. Applicants will probably be relieved to know that
"There has recently been a major restructuring of the MLA designed to align the teams with the Council’s mission, enabling the Chief Executive to assume a mainly outward facing role."
Among other things, the job description tells us what the MLA is for - why the MLA exists:
"England’s museums, libraries and archives are being transformed to make them world class to best serve our communities and visitors. ... The scope of MLA’s work includes developing policy to meet emerging agendas, working on the Cultural Olympiad, managing the Renaissance programme and other powerful strategic projects such as that for libraries in the 21st Century"
MLA’s vision is ‘Connecting people to knowledge and inspiration’ and its purpose is 'To improve people’s lives through access to collections and resources – building knowledge, supporting learning, inspiring creativity and celebrating identity’.

So now you know. If you think you are up to the challenge of putting books into libraries and people into libraries, you know where to apply.
