I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

Around the e-Book Reader in 80 days - review

Mark Schatzker, a Toronto-based writer and frequent contributor to Condé Nast Traveler, has recently blogged about his old-fashioned trip around the world in 80 days. Old-fashioned in the sense that he was "traveling no faster than 100 mph and taking the time to see, eat, [and] drink"; less old fashioned was the fact that he decided to blog about his experiences as he went, and to carry his reading material in a Sony Reader.

His review of the Reader makes interesting reading, coming down - like Andrew Marr - firmly on the positive side. OK, we may not all have his butterfly-mind reading habits, but it is clear that for travellers at least, the Reader is an ideal means of carrying and reading a small library of books.

As with some previous reviews, and many articles on e-books, the full references can be found on my web site, Writings about e-book publishing, 2007.
