    I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

    The beam that is in thine own eye

    It seems to me the height of irony that in the midst of a debate about the value of LIS-CILIP - some of which value, I maintain, is the linking and communication with members and prospective members, I should receive the latest CILIP Library+Information Gazette, highlighting on the front page the need to know "What your customers are really thinking". It starts:
    Keeping in touch with users [and by extension, members, I suppose] is a key factor in running a successful service.
    It links to a CILIP workshop on 'Evaluating the impact of your service - a quest for evidence'. Now let's see, who should attend that...
