    Location: Aberystwyth, Wales, United Kingdom

I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

CILIP - listening to the profession

Rumour has it that LIS-CILIP is to close. It will be replaced by two member-only lists. As a National Councillor for the UK Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), I am concerned that the national professional body for the library and information profession is only concerned with the views of its members. OK, so we pay the subs - but, to my mind, a professional body should respond to the concerns of the profession-at-large if it is to be, truly, a professional body, and not just a club for those that pay to join.
As almost an aside, I am also concerned that decisions like this are made without consulting the Council - the governing body of CILIP.
