I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

    Writings on e-books 2006

Two articles from newspapers have launched the IAL Writings about e-Book Publishing, 2006, which is available from the company website at http://www.i-a-l.co.uk/resource_ebook2006.html. The US newspaper, the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports on the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, which is the first college to subscribe to the Universal Digital Textbooks programme in Wisconsin. In the UK, yesterday's Observer produced a long discussion on the status of e-book publishing in the UK. Several publishers, as well as the Publishers' Association were interviewed for the article, which remarks publishers views that the time of the e-book is not yet on us, and their likely lack of willingness to sell (rather than licence) e-books. But this is in the light of e-books for hand-held readers rather than the many thousand already in use by way of PCs and laptops. The article seems a little grudging about the possibilities of e-books, and certainly does not waste time discussing their current status.
