I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

    Publish and be damned!

By some odd quirk of fate Blaise Cronin and I are giving a lecture on e-publishing and scholarly communication at almost the same time on the same day! His is on the theme of 'Publish or Perish', mine is more 'Publish and be damned' - (as Wellington is supposed to have said to his mistress, sorry - courtesan). I shall be exploring the various ways in which the Web allows publishing, and comparing this with formal publishing and scholarly communication. We both will deal with what it means to be an author in a digital age, and I shall go on to look at open access publishing, institutional repositories (not necessarily the same thing), and the difficulties of recognising and separating the wheat of 'real' publishing from the chaff of pre- and post-print copies or from self-published chat, such as this!
