I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

    More on Open Access

And while we are on the subject of open access (see previous post), the press (e.g. IWR), and indeed the authors of the Facts About Open Access report, should be more careful when they employ sweeping headlines such as "ALPSP study questions OA viability". There is open access - as in open access (free to read) journals - and open access - as in the free availability afforded by university repositories. The IWR article and the report only referred to the former. Meanwhile, Rebecca Kemp has posted some figures on the costs of setting up and running open-source OA repositories at 10 institutions ... but that's another story (Excel spreadsheet).
