    I am the owner and managing director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a company that specialises in research, consultancy and training for the information profession. We are particularly interested in all forms of electronic information resources (e-journals, e-books, etc) and I teach a course in electronic publishing at the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth. Drilling down still further(!), my interests centre on the quality and evaluation of electronic information, and in the thinking that underpins activities in library and information science.

    UKeiG Tony Kent Strix Award Presentation

    The first day at Umbrella ended with the Awards Dinner. Chris Armstrong, as Vice-Chair of UKeiG, presented the Tony Kent Strix Award to Vanda Braughton, who received it on behalf of the winner Jack Mills. The Trophy was awarded for a life's work devoted to the study, teaching, development and promotion of information retreival. The citation continued (in part), "as a major player in the British school of facet analysis which builds on the tradition of Ranganathan ... He is probably best known to the wider professional community in his role of researcher ... In 1966/67 he was Deputy Director of the prestigious Cranfield Project, supporting Cyril Cleverdon in the first major exercide in information retrieval in the United Kingdom ... A founder member and chairman of the Classification Research Group (1952-), he has lectured and written about, and been an advocate for classification theory ... [and] a driving force behind the revision of the Bliss Bibliographic Classification, chairing the Bliss Classification Association Committee, and undertaking the greater part of the work of revision as Editor of the new scheme... In 1998, Jack Mills was acknowledged by the Conference on the History and Heritage of Science Information as a 'pioneer of information science'... in 2003 his contribution to the field was marked by the award of an Honorary Fellowship of CILIP. For the length of his service to the profession, for the innovative nature of his research, and for the influence of his work on information retrieval in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Jack Mills is awarded the Tony Kent Strix Award." The trophy, in the shape of an owl landing on a brass column, is given CILIP in memory of Dr Tony Kent, a past Fellow of the Institute of Information Scientists, who died in 1997.
